Union Ridge School becomes Boys' Soccer Champs. |
|
Congratulations to Union Ridge School on becoming the 2012 Leyden-Norwood Athletic Conference Boys' Soccer Champs!!! On Friday, the URS soccer team faced their biggest challenge this season. The challenge was that the boys' soccer team was attempting to win their first ever soccer championship. We played on a very, very cold night versus a really good Hester team. URS struggled in the beginning and Hester came close to scoring on us several times, but Zack R. our goalie (8th grader), played the game of his life and saved everything that came his way. He was a wall and you could sense the frustration in Hester as they had all of their opportunities shut down. Our defense, lead by Brian (8th grader), held their ground and assisted Zack in holding the shut out. During the second half, the boys came out fired up and attacked the Hester defense until finally we scored. Greg G. obtained the first goal and Pedro S. (both 8th graders) scored the second goal. The final was URS 2 and Hester School 0. WOW! We are champions! The soccer team played an amazing game and our determination to climb to the top of the mountain before Hester is what lead us to the title. Thank you to all who came out to support! The attendance was truly impressive and leant itself to a great amount of energy throughout the game. The amazing URS has climbed the mountain once again and we intend on staying on top! |

Union Ridge’s annual Welcome Back assembly was a blast! Mr. Maguire expressed his excitement for the beginning of the new school year and encouraged the students to reflect on last year’s goal to believe they could achieve great things. Ms. Mensik, our new Assistant Principal, announced the 2012-2013 theme, “Be a S.T.A.R., Student Taking Active Responsibility” which was followed by an incredible video (Thanks, Ms. Rooney) showing celebrities, community members, students, and families taking active responsibility. The video showed us that everyone can be a S.T.A.R. Good deeds, big or small, always make a difference.Union Ridge alumni, Adam Wozny, presented his story about raising money for Multiple Sclerosis research by collecting donations for riding his bike across the state of Illinois. His choice to take active responsibility took courage and determination. Adam warmed our hearts and fueled our minds to think about the great things we can achieve by taking active responsibility at school, in our homes, and in our community. Mr. Maguire asked the audience to think about what active things they have seen others do and what things they can do in the future. Past recipients of the Husky of the Year Award were recognized so everyone could see those that have made a great impact on Union Ridge by demonstrating the husky traits throughout the school year. Students of all grade levels discussed what it means to be a Union Ridge Husky. The assembly was brought to an end by our 8th grade Peer Leaders leading the Husky chant, “Teamwork, Determination, Loyalty, Be Strong, Work Hard, Be a Husky!” Click here to view our "Be a S.T.A.R movie." Bill Bellis' visit to Union Ridge |
|
With the summer days approaching ever so quickly, one might wonder what is better than enjoying the beautiful weather. Well, if you ask our 4th grade students, they will reply: “Learning about it!”
On May 23, 2012, Union Ridge 4th grade students got a chance to meet Bill Bellis, the head meteorologist from the local Fox News TV station. Mr. Bellis explained what it takes to become a meteorologist and shared his experience of what it is like to be on TV. More importantly, he brought to life many ideas students learned about in the Weather unit in Science class. The 4th graders enjoyed learning about the complex process of forecasting the weather and safety issues during severe weather. Mr. Bellis’ field experience and his passion for meteorology sparked many new questions about storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes.
What is better than enjoying the beautiful weather and learning about it? Well, if you ask the Union Ridge teachers, they will reply: “Watching the students get excited about it!” Thank you Mr. Bellis! To learn more about the visit, watch the weather block on the Fox News at 9:00pm Friday, May 25, 2012 and go to the FOX Chicago Weather Facebook page. |
